2018 Zurich Classic Recap

Lafayette, LA        May 2, 2018

Last weekend was an incredible time for golf in the Big Easy, and the 2018 Zurich Classic of New Orleans was a tremendous success. The team competition garnered the best golfers on the PGA Tour, with eight of the top 10 players in the world competing in the event. The introduction of walk up music to the tournament in the weekend rounds was certainly well received and created plenty of buzz. This year saw a format change and the foursome (alternate shot) rounds were on Friday and Sunday. That produced more drama both in terms of making or missing the cut and crowning a champion. Zurich Insurance contributed to the optimism surrounding this Championship by announcing a sponsorship renewal through 2026. The Louisiana Golf Association was pleased to be a part of this experience through our partnership with the Zurich Classic. Our presence was seen in the designated "FanFest" area, located to the left of the 18th fairway.

The LGA had several goals for the week at the Zurich Classic, including promoting the LGA brand and raising awareness about who we are and what we do for golf in the state of Louisiana. We also sought to engage the patrons by signing up new members and fostering relationships with current members. Current members were encouraged to stop by the booth to register for a free raffle for each day of the tournament, while those who signed up for membership on site were automatically entered into the raffle. Raffle prizes were donated by Golfballs.com (Sunday’s prize), Tony Chachere’s (Saturday’s prize), and SEC Sportsman (Thursday’s prize). The LGA contributed its own raffle prize for Friday’s giveaway in the form of an Imperial hat and a Yeti tumbler. The raffle prizes encouraged current members to stop by and were an incentive for non-members to sign up that day. The LGA also signed members and non-members up for a raffle for a golf trip for two to Ireland. These raffle tickets are $20 each, and proceeds benefit junior golf and growth of the game initiatives. The LGA also gave away Rules of Golf books, “Bayou State Golfer” License Plate magnets, and Tony Chachere’s sample packets to all Zurich Classic attendees who passed by the booth.

The LGA was able to sign up many new members and reach hundreds of current members at the Zurich Classic. LGA Executive Director Logan Ray even captured a video of an alligator at TPC Louisiana that went viral!

LGA Member Raffle Prizes were awarded to the following individuals:

Larry Balyeat (New Orleans) SEC Sportsman Gift Package

Janice Ehni (Lafayette) LGA Imperial Hat, LGA Logo Yeti

Melanie Hidalgo (Baton Rouge) Tony Chachere's Gift Set

Danny Rockwell (Harahan) Golfballs.com $250.00 Gift Card

Overall it was an excellent week at Zurich Classic for the LGA as we promoted amateur golf in the state of Louisiana. We look forward to returning next year!
