JARED FONTENOT LEADS
LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION NET AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER FIRST ROUND OF
PLAY
Baton Rouge, Louisiana -- May 17, 2008 -- Jared Fontenot of Washington
fired a four-under par 68 on Saturday to lead after first round play in
the 2008 Louisiana Golf Association Net Amateur Championship. William
Johnson of Slidell, Augie Brune of Folsom, and William Haygood of
Gonzales are tied for second two shots back. Another shot back are
Sedrick Gregory of Sulphur and Jason Pounds of Bogalusa. Fontenot, who
carries a USGA Handicap Index of 7.9 (course handicap of 9), shot a
gross score of 77. Johnson (16.1 index/19 course handicap), Brune
(15.4/18), Haygood (14.0/16), Gregory (9.5/11, and Pounds (7.7/9) will
make up the final two pairings on Sunday for this Championship that uses
Net scores to crown its winner.
This year’s event is being held at the Robert Trent Jones, Sr., designed
Santa Maria GC in Baton Rouge, which played to a par of 72 at 6,600
yards on Saturday. The course was inundated with over five inches of
rain earlier in the week and was playing long as a result.
The LGA is attempting to provide a true championship event for the
higher handicap player with procedures in place to assure that
consistency and integrity are benchmarks for the event. The LGA is
utilizing the USGA Tournament Score Probability Table to adjust any
handicap indexes where a player’s score exceeds normal probability. In
addition to the Overall Net Championship, the field is divided into four
flights with the top-three finishers in each flight also receiving
awards.
In the sixth annual Net Club Team Championship, conducted concurrently
with the Net Amateur, the team from Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond
leads after the first round with a net score of six-over par 222. Oak
Knoll teammates Augie Brune, Paul Tyrney, Noel Gauthreaux, and Gregg
Smith lead the team from Pine Shadows Golf Club of Lake Charles by one
shot with 18 holes to play.
