PRESS RELEASE USGA HANDICAP SEMINAR BEING HELD IN LOUISIANA NEXT MONTH January 25, 2008 -- We will soon enter a new handicapping cycle, which spans the 2008-2011 term. With this new cycle come some important changes in the USGA Handicap System. As you no doubt remember, in order to be licensed, a representative of your club had to attend a USGA or LGA sponsored handicap seminar and pass a short quiz on the USGA Handicap System sometime during the recent 2004-2007 term. Your club’s license will remain valid until the end of 2011, provided you meet the USGA requirements for licensing. The USGA is not requiring that licensed clubs fill out a new application and verify their adherence to the USGA Handicap System checklist during the 2008-2011 term. They are, however, requiring that licensed clubs attend a USGA or LGA sponsored handicap seminar and again pass a short quiz on the USGA Handicap System sometime during the 2008-2011 term. As we mentioned during the 2004-2007 term seminars; beginning January 1, 2008, the LGA will require that in order to meet the USGA licensing requirements, your club’s representative to the USGA or LGA sponsored handicap seminar(s) must be your club’s current Handicap Committee chairperson. As you know, your Handicap Committee chairperson cannot be an employee of the club (i.e., they must be a member). You are certainly welcome to send someone from your facility’s staff, but in order to remain licensed, your Handicap Chairperson must attend a seminar by the end of 2011. On that note, we are very pleased to have USGA staff coming to Louisiana to teach our next handicap seminar on Tuesday, Feb 26th, 2008 at Oakbourne CC in Lafayette. They will bring a wealth of knowledge to the seminar and help every club understand the ins and outs of the handicap system. This will also be a great opportunity for your Handicap Chairperson to engage directly with the USGA. As mentioned, at the conclusion of the seminar attendees will take a short quiz over the material discussed in the seminar. Passing this quiz will meet the club’s licensing requirements for the next four years. To register for this event, please fill out the application attached to this article and mail it back to the USGA with the $40 fee. If you would like to register online, please go to the Handicapping section of the USGA website and follow the 2008 handicap seminar link. USGA Handicap Seminar Application
