Louisiana Golf Association & Gulf States Section PGA Introduce the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour

October 30, 2018 | Lafayette, Louisiana

The Louisiana Golf Association (LGA) and Gulf States Section PGA (GSPGA) announced the introduction of a new junior golf initiative, the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour (LJGT).  The LJGT will provide a first-class experience for competitors, and it will foster the valued traditions of the game through character development, self-reliance, and sportsmanship.  “We are looking forward to promoting and elevating junior golf in Louisiana,” said LGA Executive Director Logan Ray.  “The LJGT will create affordable playing opportunities for junior golfers at premier LGA member club facilities, and we are pleased to partner with the Gulf States PGA on this initiative that will benefit the game in Louisiana.”  The LJGT will help junior golfers build a foundation of skills and knowledge that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.  “The Gulf States PGA cherishes its 50-year relationship with the Louisiana Golf Association.  We are excited to have the opportunity to join with the LGA in the buildout of the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour.  The focus of the LJGT on youth player development, organized competition and teaching the core values of golf, will positively impact our game for generations,” said Gulf States Section PGA Executive Director Robert Brown.  Louisiana Junior Golf Tour membership is open to juniors of all skill levels, ages 11-18.  2019 LJGT registration opens on Thursday, November 1, 2018.

The LJGT will feature six new competitive opportunities for junior boys and girls in its inaugural year, in addition to the LGA Junior Amateur, Gulf States PGA Junior Championship, and the Junior River Cup.  Each event will provide an opportunity for competitors to garner Player of the Year points, which will earn the top players invitations to participate as a member of Team Louisiana in the Junior River Cup and the season finale Tour Championship in October.  The LGA and the Gulf States PGA are tremendously excited about this program and are optimistic that this will create more opportunities to help teach and grow the game of golf in Louisiana.  The LJGT will serve as a one-stop-shop for competitive junior golf in Louisiana.  For more info, visit: http://www.lgagolf.org/LJGT.

The inaugural season will kick off in spectacular fashion with the Sam Burns Junior Four-Ball Championship at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant the weekend of February 23-24, 2019.  Burns, a Louisiana native, needs no introduction to golf fans in the Bayou State.  He has graciously offered to serve as host for the first ever Junior Four-Ball event in the state at his home club Squire Creek.  Burns is beginning his rookie season on the PGA Tour and has a promising career ahead of him.  Most recently, he finished tied for third place in the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.  Burns started exactly where many of the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour competitors are now, rising through the junior ranks at the local level before dominating the national junior golf scene.  Burns won the LGA Junior Amateur Championship in 2012 at the age of 15, and he played college golf at LSU.  He exemplifies golf in Louisiana and is a role model for today’s LJGT competitors.  As he starts on his professional journey, Burns has made it one of his missions to give back to the game, and to have his support of the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour is tremendous.

The Sam Burns Junior Four-Ball Championship will combine the fun, competitive atmosphere that a Four-Ball event can create with the opportunity to meet and learn from a PGA Tour Pro.  Registration for this event opens November 1, 2018 and is limited to the first 48 teams that apply to play.  As is the case for all other LJGT events, the Sam Burns Junior Four-Ball will be conducted over 36-holes.  The timing of this event is ideal.  From the players’ standpoint, it will be a great start to the year coming off “winter rest” and being able to play in a team event.  It also provides an opportunity for Louisiana junior golfers to sharpen their game before the high school golf season begins.  Squire Creek is regarded as one of the top facilities in Louisiana, and rightly so.  The Tom Fazio designed track hosted the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in 2015, and it has hosted numerous LGA Championships over the years including the LGA Mid-Amateur in 2007, 2012, and 2014.  Squire Creek boasts some of the best greens in the state, known for their speed and undulation, and the golf course is in excellent condition year-round.

The Louisiana Junior Golf Tour season heats up in the summer with 6 events, starting in June at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.  This event will be the first of the 36-hole summer series of stroke-play events for players 11-18.  These events will feature three divisions; one Overall Girls division (13-18), one Overall Boys division (13-18) and one Boys (11-13) division.  Overall Boys will play from approximately 6,600 yards and the Girls and younger Boys will play from approximately 5,700 yards. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each division, and player of the year points will be applied to the season points race.  The LJGT will also make stops at Squire Creek CC, East Ridge CC in Shreveport, and OakWing GC in Alexandria.  For the full 2019 LJGT schedule of events see the calendar below or online here.

The unification of the LGA and the Louisiana Women’s Golf Association has added exciting changes to the LGA Junior Amateur Championship.  The 62nd edition of the LGA Junior Amateur Championship will now feature an Overall Girls division.  This is the pinnacle championship for juniors in the state of Louisiana and the champions will receive automatic invitations to compete in the Junior River Cup Matches as well as the LJGT Tour Championship.  There are 200 AJGA stars up for grabs to the top finishers in the LGA Junior Amateur and “fully exempt status” to the Overall Boys Champion.  The 62nd LGA Junior Amateur will be conducted at Bayou Oaks at City Park on the Rees Jones designed South Course July 10-12, 2019.

Joining the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour is simple and easy.  LJGT members will receive, in addition to access to LJGT events, a membership package including a LJGT hat, tee shirt, sleeve of golf balls, 2019 Rules of Golf book, and LJGT Hard Card.  Furthermore, LJGT members will receive all of the benefits that LGA members receive, which includes access to LGA Championships (if eligible), GHIN Handicapping services, free subscription to Golf Digest, Audubon Golf Trail discount card (fee cart fee at 10 Louisiana facilities) and a variety of other member benefits.  To register for the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour membership please click here.
