April 23, 2017             Lake Charles, Louisiana

Lake Charles Country Club can once again be declared the golf club with the best golfers in the state of Louisiana after taking the LGA Club Team Championship title at Contraband Bayou Golf Club at the L’auberge Casino Resort this weekend. The Lake Charles Country Club team successfully defended its 2016 LGA Club Team Championship in a dominant wire-to-wire victory, winning by fifteen strokes over Squirrel Run Golf Club #1 from New Iberia and Fennwood Hills Country Club from Zachary.  Lake Charles Country Club shot an even par 284 in Sunday’s individual stroke play final round, and coupled with their 15-under par 127 in Saturday’s 4-Ball round, they finished the Championship with an impressive 15-under par 411. Championship team members are: John Henry Faulk, Billy Gabbert, Robby Going, Doug Quienalty, Hank Shaheen, and golf professional Greg Sonnier.

Format of play for the LGA Club Team is as follows: each team consists of one of the Club’s professionals and five club members or six club members. The six-man teams compete in Four-Ball play on Saturday with the two best of the three Four-Ball scores from each team making up that team’s score for the day. On Sunday, players compete in individual stroke play with the best four of six scores comprising the team’s score. With four counting scores on Sunday vs. only two counting scores on Saturday, it’s not unusual for the winning team to come from far back in the pack, making for an extremely exciting finish on Sunday. However, Lake Charles Country Club adhered to their game plan and did not allow any teams to leap them on the leaderboard.

Lake Charles CC started the day with a four-shot lead over Fennwood Hills Country Club in Zachary, the team they were paired with in the final three starting times of the day. Hank Shaheen of DeQuincy shot a three under par 68, tied for the low round of the day. Other contributing individual scores were shot by: Greg Sonnier (69), Doug Quienalty (73), and Robby Going (74). John Henry Faulk also carded a 74.

Here’s a recap of Lake Charles Country Club’s leaderboard:

Rounding out the top 3 were:

T2. 2011 & 2014 LGA Club Team Champions Squirrel Run GC of New Iberia (426): Danny Duplantis, Kenley Jones, Brody Leblanc, Scott Shea, Nick Trahan, and Kris Viator.

T2. Fennwood Hills CC of Zachary (426): Wendell Akins, Jr., Dante Caldera, Jeremy Gautreaux, Brad Jackson, Ricky Morse, and Jay Sanders.

The Louisiana State Club Team Championship trophy will be engraved with Lake Charles Country Club’s name and will be on display at the winning facility until next year’s event. Lake Charles CC also won a beautiful crystal trophy that will stay at the club permanently, and each team member took home an individual crystal piece in addition to a $200 gift certificate redeemable in the Contraband Bayou Golf Shop. This Ryder Cup type event proved yet again to be a fun and competitive event for competitors.

Sunday was another gorgeous day at Contraband Bayou Golf Club, with temperatures in the mid-60s. Gusting winds made scoring conditions difficult. Two other players shot three-under par 68 on Sunday: Cade Hebert from Hebert Municipal GC and Neithan Allen from The National GC of Louisiana #2. The Tom Fazio-designed Contraband Bayou course played to a par of 71 at approximately 6,545 yards.
